Perhaps [WE] have lived with this miracle too long to be properly appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again. – Ronald Reagan January 5th, 1967-
When our Pilgrim Forefathers first stepped onto these shores, they were not carrying with them empty platitudes and mere lofty ideals; they were armed with a firm belief worth dying for and sacrificing all they had – that freedom, true freedom, was only possible, not if one believed in the idea of self-government, but rather if a community was committed to the practice of it. Freedom begins inside the heart of man. It comes as a gift from God, both as an incredible privilege as well as a weighty responsibility. It cannot be coerced, but with courage must voluntarily be embraced and extended to all, but above all, for freedom to be enjoyed, it must be lived out.
In this very same inaugural address, Reagan reissued a profound warning: “The deterioration of every government begins with the decay of the principle upon which it was founded. This is true today as it was when it was written in 1748.” As such, while we are still able, may we restore the glorious foundations upon which this great nation was built. To our own peril, we ignore the self-evident truth found within our Founding Documents and the wisdom of the Scriptures upon which they are based.
